Children attending our setting experience a sense of freedom in the countryside, learning outdoors, working in teams and individually, many master small tasks relevant to their ability. Children are actively encouraged to visit the outdoors in all weathers and allow them free exploration. A purpose built Forest School area has been developed where the children can choose a range of activities including den building, cooking on a fire and using tools such as saws.
Forest School encompasses all the children’s learning styles, visual, audio and kinaesthetic. When we plan activities, these styles are taken into consideration. The safety of the children is of paramount importance. They quickly learn the boundaries within which they must work. The children respond well to the sense of freedom and adhere to the roles laid down for their safety.
Throughout the course of the year all children visit the Millennium Woods, a short walk from the setting, to engage in forest school activities. During the half terms and holidays, children of school age are provided with the opportunity to extend their skills learnt through forest school activities at the nursery.
